B40, M40 and T20 income ranges: where your household sits
Checked by Gabriela Ruiz, financial analyst, against the official sources
B40, M40 and T20 group Malaysian households by income: the bottom 40%, the middle 40% and the top 20%. In the Department of Statistics Malaysia (DOSM) Household Income Survey 2024, the latest edition, the bottom 40% of households had a monthly gross income of up to RM5,858, the middle 40% up to RM12,681, and the top 20% from RM12,682.
These are household figures: the gross income of everyone in the household from all sources, not one person's salary. The median household income was RM7,017 a month and the mean RM9,155. Because pay differs so much between states, a household can be M40 nationally and B40 in Selangor or Kuala Lumpur, so the calculator shows both.
Is your household B40, M40 or T20?
From DOSM's Household Income Survey 2024 percentile tables for citizen households. National: B40 up to RM 5,858.00, T20 from RM 12,682.00. Government aid programmes use their own eligibility rules.
B40, M40 and T20 income ranges, 2024
DOSM publishes household income for each of 100 percentile groups. The B40 covers percentiles 1 to 40, the M40 41 to 80 and the T20 81 to 100, so the ranges below are the edges of those groups in DOSM's 2024 table.
For scale: one employee on the national median salary of RM2,940 is a B40 household on that income alone. Two earners on that median make RM5,880, which is M40 nationally.
| Group | Monthly household income | Share of households |
|---|---|---|
| B40 | Up to RM5,858 | Bottom 40% |
| M40 | RM5,859 to RM12,681 | Middle 40% |
| T20 | RM12,682 and above | Top 20% |

How DOSM measures household income
The figures come from DOSM's Household Income Survey, run at least twice in every five years. Household income is the gross monthly income of all members of a household, from salaries and from non-salary sources such as property income, dividends and interest. The official statistics cover Malaysian citizen households.
DOSM notes that the percentile-level figures carry larger relative standard errors than the headline median, so treat a household close to a boundary as near the line rather than firmly on one side.
B40, M40 and T20 are statistical groups. Government aid programmes set their own eligibility rules and income lines, so check the programme you are applying to. For individual pay rather than household income, see average salary in Malaysia.
