On RM 2,600.00 a month with an 8-hour day the hourly rate is RM 12.50. Ten hours of overtime on normal working days pays at least RM 187.50.

Overtime rates under the Employment Act

Normal working day: at least 1.5 times the hourly rate for every hour beyond your normal hours.

Rest day: at least 2 times the hourly rate for hours beyond your normal hours of work. Work within the normal hours on a rest day is paid as half a day's or a full day's wage, depending on how long you work, and is not counted by this calculator.

Public holiday: at least 3 times the hourly rate for hours beyond your normal hours, on top of the holiday pay for the normal hours.

Total overtime is limited to 104 hours in a month.

Who is entitled to Employment Act overtime?

Employees earning up to RM4,000 a month, and manual workers whatever their wage, are covered by the Act's overtime rules. If you earn more, overtime depends on your employment contract. Your employer can always pay more than the minimum rates.

The ordinary rate of pay is based on your basic wage and some fixed allowances, not on overtime, bonuses or travel claims. If your contract lists fixed allowances, check whether they belong in the rate.

Overtime and your payslip

Overtime pay is not subject to EPF contributions, but it counts as income for tax, so it can raise your PCB for the month. See your full slip in the salary calculator and the PCB calculator. If you are on the statutory minimum, check the hourly figures on the minimum wage page.
